Bank accounts as a non-dom 2026

The right account structure for your start in Ireland.

We support you in setting up the bank accounts you need and match the account structure to your personal and tax situation. For non-doms in particular, it matters which money runs through which account.

When it comes to accounts, most families ask the smaller question first: which Irish bank do I open a current account with? The bigger one is what your accounts as a whole look like after the move. Which money sits where, which account pays for your Irish life, and which accounts deliberately stay outside Ireland. For a family with capital this is a tax question, and it is settled before the move.

The Irish everyday account

For daily life your family needs an Irish current account: for direct debits, salaries, school bills, the tradesman. The basic requirements are modest: proof of identity and proof of address. Alongside it, as a safety net, there is the basic bank account: a basic bank account is a current account with no fees for everyday banking in the first year.

The stumbling block is the same as with the PPS number: proof of address. If you have just arrived and are living somewhere temporary, it often takes a while to find the document the bank accepts as proof of your Irish address. That is why opening the account belongs in a planned sequence for the first weeks.

Why accounts outside Ireland

Three old bicycles leaning against a mossy rubble-stone wall by a wet path.

Now to the part that decides about money. As a non-dom, your foreign capital stays outside Irish taxation as long as it stays outside Ireland; tax arises on remittance, and a remittance can be as small as a card payment in the supermarket. The full mechanism is on the page on non-dom status, and its most important consequence is a rule for your accounts: old wealth, new income and the money for Ireland belong in separate accounts, and the separation is made before the move.

From this follows the sentence this page is about: as a non-dom you need good accounts outside Ireland. They are where your old wealth and your foreign income sit without touching your Irish position. A single mixed account from which everything is paid can damage that position for good, because an account history can be explained afterwards but sorted only beforehand. Which pots there are and which of them pays for Ireland, we decide with you at the tax registration. Only then are the accounts for them opened.

Who opens them

Opening accounts outside Ireland is a craft of its own with its own contacts, and within our network it has an address of its own: Freedom Banking Plus. That is where the people sit who for years have done nothing else but connect internationally minded families and entrepreneurs with their banks, and that is also where you find which jurisdictions come into question and how an account is opened remotely.

Tell them you are moving to Ireland and will be taxed as a non-dom. We provide the tax framework, they provide the accounts.
